Auxiliary of Lehigh Valley Hospital—Cedar Crest
The Auxiliary of Lehigh Valley Hospital—Cedar Crest's roots date back more than 100 years. Back then, 13 women formed the Auxiliary of Allentown Hospital to raise money for the city's first hospital. Decades later, folks held an annual plant sale from an old stone farmhouse near where Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest stands today. Proceeds from the plant sale went to the hospital. That began the Auxiliary of Lehigh Valley Hospital—Cedar Crest.
Today, the Auxiliary of Lehigh Valley Hospital – which combines the Cedar Crest and 17th Street auxiliaries – has more than 400 members who run four bustling gift shops, with all proceeds benefiting the two hospitals. The auxiliary also hosts an annual poinsettia sale and manages parking lots during the Allentown Fair. In 2008, the group's gift to the hospitals was $350,000.
It is the only hospital auxiliary in the nation to sponsor two endowed chairs. The cost of funding a chair is $2 million, and each one supports education and clinical research in a specialized field of medicine. The auxiliary's first endowed chair was in critical care – and the pledge was fulfilled ahead of schedule. They are currently working toward finishing their pledge for a second chair, this one in emergency medicine.
